Green Building

Our work utilizes some of the latest and broadest thinking on green building, defined as increasing the efficiency with which homes use resources (materials, energy and water) while reducing the impact on human health and the environment.

Since 2003, we have been conducting original research on green homebuilding, focusing on two topics: "systems building" of homes and current Japanese homebuilding practices, which generally include green features. We use the LEED for Homes system, promulgated by the United States Green Building Council. We are pleased that Evertson Hill, our most recent project, is our greenest to date. Some features that make Evertson Hill green include:

• Careful construction that left most of the lot undisturbed
• Location of the house on ground that is not environmentally sensitive
• Walls that were manufactured off-site to reduce material waste and shrink the carbon footprint in transportation of materials to the site
• Floor and roof components that were sized off-site
• Locally salvaged materials, such as granite recovered from local building foundations
• Use of environmentally friendly materials where possible, including engineered lumber and oriented strand board
• Insulation that is will in excess of building code requirements and increases the heating and cooling efficiency of the house
