The youngest, hippest addition to Petrides Homes is CountryLoft (patent pending), our developing project that takes the industrial aesthetic of 1970s SoHo and moves it out of the city. Guided by the goal of creating our greenest and, budgeted at just $150 per square foot, our most inexpensive home to date, we are synthesizing the best of green building practices into something entirely new.
One section of the house is made up of modular units, allowing us to easily and cost-effectively provide what are usually the most labor-intensive parts of a house, like the kitchen and bathrooms. A tower, made from a steel frame and insulated panels, houses up to four cozy bedrooms. These elements connect to the visually arresting loft space. Constructed from steel girders and a standing-seam roof, the loft pays homage to the "industrial" spaces of the country, like sheds and silos. This open area enables us to inexpensively add many square feet of living space, and the glass walls both give the space a chic, contemporary feel and aid in the intelligent energy design of the house. Any of these three areas of the house can be adjusted in size to fit the owner's budget and needs.
CountryLoft™ is a house of substance for people who care about ecological conservation but who don't want to spend millions of dollars to achieve it. The house minimizes impact on the environment both during construction, with prefabricated and recycled materials, and after construction, with a design that reduces energy use. We believe that the most essential green principle is thinking in advance to prevent waste, and CountryLoft™ is the epitome of this. It can even be deconstructed and moved to another site, if necessary—an ultimate version of recycling.
Because it adopts the vernacular of the American countryside, it can easily fit into many rural landscapes. We envision CountryLoft™ being appropriate for a wide range of owners, from young budget-conscious artists who need space and solitude to urban professionals who want a laid-back and green weekend getaway.
